Wisdom of the waves.
James knew there was much he could learn from the old man as he sat quietly in the corner of Bohai’s studio.
Bohai’s hand slowly turning the single piece of Mother of Pearl he had cut and polished. It was now a blank canvas waiting for the artist’s gift.
He had been examining the piece for nearly an hour, turning it into the light backwards and forwards as if absorbing all of its colours and hues, while all the time whispering quietly to himself.
James couldn’t make out any of the old man’s conversation with the piece.
Finally, Bohai turned to James and smiled. Handing the delicate piece to him Bohai asked
{“What is it that you see James?”}
Turning it in his hand, James replied.
{“A beautiful piece of Mother of Pearl Bohai.”}
Again, Bohai smiled.
{“You have travelled from my future 245 years from now James”}
James nodded handing the piece back to him.
Again, caressing the piece, Bohai began;
{“It has journeyed through the centuries also.”
“It tells me of welcoming the waves over time from far-off distant shores. Opening and closing as it greets time itself. Drinking the wisdom of the waves.”
“Over countless decades it has seen the rising and falling of the moon, the setting and rising of the sun.”}
He continued;
{“Enshrined in its beauty are stories from before the time of man told by rivers, oceans and lands that even now, man is yet to visit.”
“The waters of the ages have passed through her welcoming lips leaving behind them tales of storms and times of calm.
The arrival and passing of time are painted within her glory.”}
{“Until now she and only she, has been the guardian of this wisdom, which she now passes to me.”
“She has asked me to be worthy of her final purpose, as she will never again greet the wisdom of ancient waves.
This is my sacred pledge to her life as she gives to me her unique blessing.”}
Bohai bowed his head, closed his eyes and said.
{“May my hands and heart be worthy of your gift.”}
