An artist’s grief
Shrouded in grief the artist sat, head bowed in silent concentration.
Again, his family would go hungry tonight.
He dreamed of a day when his work would transport them from the poverty of their lives.
Hand carving his feelings lovingly into the delicate mother of pearl his eyes again filled.

The scene now portrayed had come to him in his dreams and with the words and poems of Emperor Ch’ien Lung.
It had taken him four days with the echoes of his heart beats etched into every stroke.
Dusting the final detail away from the exquisite carving of his creation, tomorrow another bowl of rice would be his payment.
As he blew out the candle, the strains of melancholy drifted in through the open window.
Tonight, they would go hungry, but tomorrow they will eat.
