The Leaving

Robert Robertson of Strowan stood on the deck of the Cornwallis looking out at the angry sea. It was the year of our lord 1797 and his fear was palpable.

What had brought him as a member of the Royal Family of Scotland to this terrifying place?

As he had left Scotland two weeks earlier to take up his commission as Captain of the merchant ship Cornwallis, his father had told him of his mission.

“Feumaidh tu ulaidhean à Sìona a thoirt air ais a nì cinnteach gum bi am mac againn san àm ri teachd!” he had said

{“You must bring back treasures from China that will secure our future son!”} he had said.

“Nì an reic bho bheairteas an taobh a-muigh ar suidheachadh mo Mhac.”

{“The sale from riches of the orient will ensure our position my Son.”}

It was raining lightly with a persistent mist and Robert shook with fear as the Master at Arms gave the order to cast off the forward and aft ropes.

Without a day at sea and with not a second of command in charge of men, he could feel the horror of the 9-month journey to Madras, India, flash before him.

(Captains of merchant vessels for the East India Trading Company in the 1800’s were not selected for their seafaring skills but for their place in elite society and connections)

James could see Robert trembling as he stood beside him on the Captains deck.

With his knowledge from 2020 James knew that Robert would survive and succeed in his journey to Madras and onto China in 1798 and be successful.

He placed a comforting hand on the Captains shoulder.

“Tha sinn a-staigh airson deagh aimsir mo Chaiptean; tha na gaothan aig ar druim agus tha an sgioba ann an deagh shunnd airson ar turas.” James encouraged reassuringly.

{“We are in for fine weather my Captain; the winds are at our back and the crew are in good spirits for our journey.”} James encouraged reassuringly.

Robert seemed less than comforted as he lurched to the port side and lost his lunch.
