Let us journey together.

Holding her exquisite Queen Charlotte pendant Melanie ran her figures over the outer rim. So delicate was the carving done for the Queen in 1780, even under a microscope she felt she couldn’t have counted the indentations on the circumference. She took the piece onto the balcony in the bright New York sunshine. Tilting it from side to side the light reflecting off the delicate mother of pearl captured the hues of the rainbow.

The lion and unicorn on the Royal crest of arms in the centre were unbelievable and seemed to be looking back at her from their regal duties. She knew it was the full coat of arms of the British Royal Family prior to 1810. The lion seemed to be smiling at her as she wondered why the unicorn was haltered and chained. Was he a reluctant Royal servant?

How could such intricacy be inscribed by hand with only primitive tools so long ago in a simple artisan’s shack in Canton China 250 years in past history, she mused? The whole piece was only 4cm across with the detail in the centre of the crest being a mere 1cm while still containing eleven individual elements!

Turning the one-millimetre thick pendant piece over she gazed at the elegant Crown of the British Royal Family and the initials CR – Charlotte Regina.

This was indeed of incredible historical significance.

What stories could this piece, held by the Queen playing evening card games in the candle lite chambers of Queen’s Lodge Buckingham House Windsor, have hidden within it? What journeys will it transport her to hear?

She would show it to Marie Antoinette on her next visit. Maybe she would come with her and finally meet her friend from across the English Channel.

The two Queens would have much to talk about.

Giggling to herself Melanie smiling spoke out loud, “I will now have to speak and understand German!”

“Hallo Königin Charlotte. Mein Name ist Melanie Osborne und das ist meine Freundin und deine Marie Antoinette.”

{“Hello Queen Charlotte. My name is Melanie Osborne and this is my friend and yours Marie Antoinette.”}
