Life’s a continuum.
James woke startled by what had just happened. Reaching for Melanie his hand was shaking as he stirred her.
Rolling over she stared at his ashen face. “What’s the matter?!” Melanie blurted.
“Louis came to me in my dreams Mel. I don’t understand what he needed to tell me.”
“What did he say James?”
He said
“Ce n'est pas la fin ni même le début; c'est un continuum.”
{“It is not the end or even the beginning; it is a continuum.”}
“I don’t understand!”
Squeezing his hand to comfort him. Melanie said.
“I’ll get some coffee on, just relax. I’ll bring you a cup. I’m sure it will be ok my love. Don’t worry.”
As she reached the door, she looked back at James sitting upright in bed, his brow furrowed in deep thought.
Tray in hand Melanie returned 10 minutes later.
“Is that all Louis said to you?”
“No, he also said”
“Une goutte d'eau dans l'océan peut ne jamais toucher le grain de sable deux fois, mais elles existent toujours et ne faisaient qu'un.” And then he repeated
“Ce n'est pas la fin ni même le début; c'est un continuum.”
{“A drop of water in the ocean may never touch the grain of sand twice, but they still exist and once were as one.”}
And then he repeated {‘It is not the end or even the beginning; it is a continuum.’}
“Wow that sure is cryptic James. I wonder what he meant?”
They sat quietly sipping their coffee without further words.
At 8.45 the phone rang. Picking up the cell, James could see the call was from his father.
“Hi Dad, how are you doing?” asked James
“I’m sorry son but I have some very bad news. Your Mum passed away this morning at 7am.” His voice was weak and James could hear him sobbing.
“What!!” exclaimed James shaking in disbelief.
“Before she passed James, she woke me, squeezed my hand and smiled. I think she was at peace. She said the strangest thing.
She said ‘It was not the end or even the beginning; it was a continuum.’ And then she closed her eyes.”
James looked at Melanie with tears rolling down his cheeks.
