Back to China

Finishing breakfast on the balcony of their New York apartment, James turned to Melanie.

“I’m sorry I have to go into work on a Saturday Mel, but this new promotion to General Manager means there’s a lot I need to catch up on.”

“That’s okay James.” Melanie smiled

“Do you have anything planned for today?”

“Yeah, I was thinking I’d take a trip to China town to see if I can find some silk flowers to arrange around the base of the vase you bought me.”

“Great idea.” grinned James. “Good luck! I’ll see you at about 4.” With that James left for work.

Showering and dressing Melanie called for a cab.

She took a picture of the vase with her iPhone.

Before long she found exactly what she was looking for.

Rounding the corner into Bowery Street, Melanie stopped, dead in her tracks.

“What is that!?” She exclaimed under her breath.

The door to the Chuan Kung Music Palace Theatre was slightly open and the music filtered into the street.

She had never heard anything like it, but for some reason that she couldn’t understand, she’d heard it before.

Was it from her past; or her future?

Next door to the Theatre was the ‘Yummy Palace’ Chinese café and restaurant.

Melanie walked inside and sat at a table near the door.

The young waitress brought a pot of Chinese tea and set it down in front of her, handing her the menu.

“我能為您服務嗎?”

{“How can I serve you?”}

Without hesitate and not understanding how, she answered her in Chinese.

“請給我一小份餃子嗎?? 三個開胃菜和三個甜食。”

{“Can I have a small serving of jiaozi please.? Three savoy and three sweet.”}

Smiling the young girl bowed politely and left.

The music from the theatre next door was being played into the café through loudspeakers.

“那是什麼音樂?” Melanie asked as the waitress arrived with her order.

{“What is that music?”} Melanie asked as the waitress arrived with her order.

“這是為今晚在劇院的表演排練的音樂家之一。 你喜歡它嗎?”

{“It is one of the musicians who is rehearsing for this evening’s performance at the theatre. Do you like it?”}

“確實很多。” replied Melanie

{“Very much indeed.”} replied Melanie

“如果您想听聽其他歌手的話,我們今天晚上有音樂會門票。” smiled the young girl

{“We have tickets available for the concert this evening if you would like to hear the other artists.”} smiled the young girl.

“是的,我會!” smiled Melanie

{“Yes, I would!”} smiled Melanie

Paying for her jiaozi, Melanie booked a table for 7.30 pm and bought 2 tickets for the evening concert at 9pm.

How was your day Mel? asked James when he got home.

“詹姆斯真是太棒了。 您可以告訴我,當我們從晚餐和今晚的演出回來後,您如何享受它。”

“It was amazing James. You can tell me how you enjoyed it when we get back from dinner and a show tonight.” She said in Chinese.

What? James asked with that look that she, only she recognized.

“You’ll get the picture my love.” Melanie giggled
