The Queens Commission 1775

Four days had passed since the barbarian ship had arrived in the harbour.

Footsteps on the crushed stone of his siheyuan told him of visitors. Sliding back the flimsy screen. his spirits lifted.

{“Greetings Bohai, this is an emissary from a land far away. He has a commission for you.”}

{“Greetings and welcome to my humble home.”} Bohai replied.

{“We have a very important commission for you to perform.”}

“Can you ask him if he can achieve perfection?” asked the elegantly dressed stranger.

{“Bohai, I have shown the Queens emissary the quality of your artistry. The Queen requires mother of pearl gaming counters with her Royal Highnesses’ crest of arms. Could you achieve such detail?”}

Bohai took the parchment offered.

{“The Queen will require 20 round counters, 40 square and 80 rectangular gaming counters Bohai. Could you complete this commission?”}

The old man’s hands were shaking.

He bowed his head, once twice and three times.

{“We will return tomorrow to discuss our arrangement.”}

They left the siheyuan without turning back.

An hour passed before Bohai’s eldest daughter Chunhau (spring flowers} arrived home from the market. Telling her of the commission from the Queen; he asked

{“Can you inspire my heart Chunhau?”}

{“I will give you my gift father.”} Chunhau offered.
