All things pass

Awakening on the bamboo mat in the cramped siheyuan he straightened and stretched his old back.

Offering his prayer for the day he spoke the words of Lao Tzu - All things pass

night_view-2.jpg

{All things pass

A sunrise does not last all morning

All things pass

A cloudburst does not last all day

All things pass

Nor a sunset all night

All things pass

What always changes?

Earth…sky…thunder…

Mountain…water…

Wind…fire…lake…

These change

And if these do not last

Do man’s visions last?

Do man’s illusions?

Take things as they come

All things pass All things pass}

Resting on his bamboo cane, Bohai {elder brother sea} trod along his morning path overlooking the harbour. His labour on withered legs, bringing beads of perspiration to his furrowed brow.

Rounding the ridge, a smile and joy came over him.

During the night a barbarian tall ship had arrived in the harbour, it’s flag of Great Britain fluttering in the morning breeze.

The night had been warm and the morning mist falling on the water made it seem as if the ship was floating on a white cloud of prosperity.

They brought with them riches to buy silks, porcelain, tea and for him it would bring the promise of work. A commission using his artistry to carve his mother of pearl pieces for the rich and wealthy of Europe.

His steps were lively as he returned home.

野蠻人已經到了我的孩子們! 我們很快會再次吃得好。He gleefully exclaimed to his daughter.

{“The barbarians have arrived my children! We will soon eat well again.”} He gleefully exclaimed to his daughter.
