On the one side of this exquisite antique mother of pearl jewel, there is a superbly fretted border of scrolling leaves, flowers and fruit (Buddha’s finger citrons and lotus fruit) with the crest of a wolf’s head and the nobleman’s motto in Latin; ‘Spectemur Agendo’ meaning ‘Let us be judged by our actions’ along with the monogram JW and a finely etched other scene depicting dogs.

The deep-carved scene to the other side of the piece circa 1810 shows three men in conversation at a table.
